Cuban bank restricts access to cash

Blaming technical difficulties, Banco Metropolitano announced Feb. 5 that customers are restricted to one ATM cash withdrawal per day

CUBA STANDARD — Banco Metropolitano announced Feb. 5 that customers are restricted to withdrawing cash at its ATM’s only once per day.

The state bank did not give an end date, blamed technical difficulties with bank cards, and said it is “working to rehabilitate service in the least time possible.”

Other Cuban banks did not report problems.

The service interruptions at Banco Metropolitano also affect point-of-sale transactions for merchants and telephone banking involving magnetic cards issued by the bank.

According to the Central Bank, 1.6 million bank cards were in circulation as of 2013. Since 2004, Cuban banks have worked with Chinese ATM equipment. As of 2014, there were more than 500 machines in the island.
