Cuba and the Human Development Index

By Armando Portela

Cuba ranked No. 70 in 2020, down from 68 in 2016, among 188 countries in the Human Development Index (HDI).

The measure is used by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to monitor and compare wellbeing worldwide.

That’s not bad at all, considering that the island was ahead of roughly 62% of all countries. Cuba is behind other Latin American countries — Chile ranked No. 43, Argentina 46, Uruguay 55, Panama 57, and Costa Rica 62 — but ahead of Mexico (74), Peru (78), Colombia (83), Brazil (84), Ecuador (86) and the Dominican Republic (88).
