CUBA STANDARD — With 40% of the total population now fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and officials saying that the country’s pharmaceutical industry has produced sufficient doses to cover the rest of the population, Cuban authorities are focusing efforts on exporting vaccines and know-how.
In the most recent success, Vietnam, after having been hit by a wave of contagion through the delta variant of COVID, agreed to buy 5 million doses of the Abdala vaccine, which was developed and is produced by the Havana-based Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB).
During a visit of Vietnamese president Nguyen Xuan Phuc to Havana Sept. 23, the head of Vietnam’s Centre for Research and Production of Vaccines and Biologicals (Polyvac) signed an agreement with CIGB Director Marta Ayala, covering supply of 5 million doses.
