Analysis: Cuba’s leadership, still firmly in the saddle

Post-May Day thoughts: The social outburst of July 11, 2021 — prompted by the sustained intolerance and gross negligence in the management of the Party-State, the effects of U.S. economic warfare, and the devastation of two years of pandemic — severely dented the image of stability and legitimacy of the Cuban Revolution. The crackdown prompted an abundance of criticism against police violence, the trials of those arrested, and the sentences handed down. Not a few doubted the capacity of the Party-State to reestablish its dominance, and many questioned its ability to rally broad masses on the first May Day march since the pandemic struck.
